Whether you are wanting to start a blog so that you can write in your free time or wanting to start writing as a beginning influencer, every potential blogger has a dream blog in mind. There are a million excuses to not do something, including not knowing where to start. That is where I am here to help, as a content writer, I am here to give you all the tips and tricks to starting your dream blog. Let’s get into it and get these blogs up and running!
Step 1: Picking a Topic
To get your blog up and running, so that you can generate blog posts, you must first decide on a general topic. This topic should be something you are not only informed about but passionate about. Your topic should be unique to you: What gets you excited every day and what do you love reading about? Is there a specific topic people come to you to ask questions about? Your topic can be about anything you want, from crafting to cooking to travel, and anything and everything in between. All that matters is that your topic is interesting to you so that you can write posts about it and not get bored.
Subtopics
It may also be a good idea to have not only the main topic but a subtopic (or multiple) as well. This allows you to expand more in your blog posts and gives you a wider range of topics to write about. If your main topic is very general, it would probably make writing your blog posts a whole lot easier if you have a subtopic as well.
Step 2: Crafting a Name
If you are anything like me, this will be the most challenging step when it comes to starting your blog: choosing your blog name. while this may seem like one of the most important aspects of your blog, in the long run, it is not. It is best to not spend an absurd amount of time deciding on a name, rather pick something simple and make it stick! Once you pick a name and get writing, everything will fall into place. One important tip to helping craft a name is to make your blog name a little relevant to the topic of your blog or make the blog name based on your name.
Step 3: Picking a Platform
The next step in creating your blog is well actually creating the blog itself. There are various blog platforms available, such as:
Wix
WordPress
Squarespace
Previously, I have used WordPress to create a blog in one of my college courses and found the platform to be very user-friendly. WordPress allows you to use their premade templates to allow you to create your blog, while also giving you the option to customize them in any way you desire. There are multiple themes and color options as well. The platform offers a free version, as well as a paid subscription. I would recommend trying out the free version of WordPress first and if you do not like it, try the other platforms.
Deciding on a Theme
While you are deciding which platform, you want to use for your blog, you should also be working on a theme for your blog. Choosing a theme for your blog allows your audience to get a better glimpse into who you are. When you are designing your theme, you can your premade themes on WordPress (if that is the platform you choose) or you can purchase themes externally.
Registering Your Domain
Once you have chosen a platform for your blog, the next step is to register your domain and make things official! If you want readers to be able to search for your blog through a search engine you should consider registering and purchasing your domain. In addition to this, if you reach the point where you make money from your blogs, you must register your domain.
Step 4: Producing Your First Blog & Publishing
Now it is time to get writing! Once you have finished all the behind-the-scenes work, you are finally able to get writing about your chosen topic. A good rule of thumb for first-time bloggers is to write at minimum five blogs before publishing your work. Doing this will allow you to spend time working on marketing and promoting your blogs to your target audience, while already having a selection of blogs posted.
